Feed the soil – Research to Real-World Practice for Farmers
Session hosted by ORC.
Composted organic waste is a key input to provide food to soil organisms and build soil health and fertility in farming systems. Growing interest in soil health and best management practices among farmers has renewed interest in composting methods, including Bokashi and Johnson-Su and use of products from composting (e.g. extracts, compost teas) to grow healthy and productive crops. Join us for an informal talk led by an ORC researcher looking into the science behind composting and farmers approaching on farm composting at different scales.
This session will see Organic Research Centre, Project Partners Andrew Sincock from Agriton, and farmer Andy Howard introduce the Feed the Soil Project that is studying evidence on the impacts of compost and its products on soil health and crop production. Farmers will share practical experiences of integrating composting into their farming systems. Andy Howard will discuss how they have been using Johnson-Su compost extracts on arable farm in Kent and Andrew Sincock will share insights and approaches for using Bokashi at a farm scale.
This session will explain the project and outline the planned approach for figuring out how to best use organic waste to boost helpful microbes, while keeping crop yields and farm income steady.
Tickets are limited, but online tickets are also available.
