The GREATsoils project is running six field trials this year which aim to compare different soil assessment methods in horticultural systems during the 2016 and 2017 growing seasons. The six growers from across the UK, ranging from Scotland to Kent, and from protected cropping systems, over field veg to top fruit orchards, are all interested in finding practical methods to assess, monitor and improve soil organic matter in their soils.
This day will concentrate on the first results from the trial hosted by Iain Tolhurst. The field trial is comparing different soil assessment methods in diverse organic vegetable rotations. The aims are to improve soil organic matter and soil biology and the methods compared are NRM soil health test, visual soil assessment and earthworm counts in early and late sown green manures after potatoes and ahead of brassicas.
