OCW has published a report, written by ORC staff, of current evidence concerning the effects of organic farming on soil carbon sequestration. Although organic cropping systems have considerable potential for increasing soil carbon, the amount that can be sequestered is still uncertain due to the disparity in assessment methods and farming/land-use systems. The reliance on legumes and biological instead of industrial nitrogen fixation means organic farming will have a positive impact on climate change mitigation through reduced fossil energy use and related carbon dioxide and nitrous oxide emissions.
