Seeing the Wood, the Trees and the Catch 22

Up to the middle of the last Century, agroforestry (the integration of trees into farming
systems) provided a rich backdrop to large areas of European farmland (see, for example,
fascinating pictures at www.montpellier.inra.fr/safe/). However, specialisation in recent
decades led to antipathy between agriculturalists and foresters, which has been bad for
the development of agroforestry. It could be that this is now changing.
