GREATsoils field day

Event Date : March 27, 2018

Using green manures to optimise nitrogen availability
The Yew Tree, Grimshaw Lane, Ormskirk L39 1PD 1300-16.45pm

Green manures are central to building and maintaining soil fertility in sustainable horticultural systems. With dozens of species to choose from, the challenge for many growers is choosing the right ones for the job in the right proportions to ensure the nutrients are available to the following crop at the right time. This GREATsoils field lab, also part of the Innovative Farmers programme, is led by the Molyneux Kale company, working with the Organic Research Centre. It has been comparing three green manure mixtures both terms of their ability to build available Nitrogen for a following brassica crop and the economics of the system.

The mixtures were sown in April 2017, incorporated in July and spring greens drilled in August. Throughout the growing season we have been taking regular soil samples and tissue samples to measure the contribution each mixture has made to nourishing the crop and how they compare to synthetic N fertilisers.

This workshop is an opportunity to discuss the results and the recommendations coming out the project, and to get a growers perspective on using green manures and participating in on farm research.
